K-9 Team
Takes A Bite Out Of Competition
It was
a weekend for the dogs in Tucson, Arizona.
The 17th Annual Tucson Police K-9 Trail was
held November 12th -14th with over 65 Law
enforcement K-9 Teams. Among them were K-9
Aghbar and his Handler SSgt Kris Evers with
the 10th Security Forces Squadron. Aghbar, a
6 year old German Shepherd and Evers have
been a team since January 2002, when they
started at the Air Force Academy. Aghbar is
a dual purpose dog trained to detect
explosives, and bad guys. Aghbar made his
showing finding those bad guys. The team
took home a 5th Place award in the Area
Search portion and a 4th place award in the
Building Search Portion of the competition.
Out of
the 65 teams, about half were from the
Department of Defense, and Aghbar was the
only military dog to place in those two
events.
Other
portions of the competition included
explosives detection, tactical obedience,
agility, and handler protection. Peterson
AFB K-9 also made a strong showing by
placing in agility and a team award. To be
eligible for a team award a unit must have
had at least two dog teams in the event.
Fort Carson K-9 placed in explosives
detection. Awards were given for 1st to 5th
place in each event. "Colorado Springs
Military took home a nice chunk from Tucson
this year," Evers said.
