Dog deploys, anticipates 'ruff' duty

Academy working dog George C. Haus will deploy in February with handler Staff Sgt. Todge Smith.

The 2-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who arrived at the Academy at 10 months old likely will be in the aircraft cabin with the NCO, said 10th Security Forces Squadron kennel manager Mr. Chris Jakubin.

Police K-9 MagazineNo longer are the days of the Military Working Dog (MWD) Handler to expect to stay in his branch of service.  As the war in Afghanistan changes, so does the mission of the K-9 Unit.  At a remote location in the northeastern mountains of Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border, sits a US Army Forward Operating Base.  Attached to the US Army Infantry unit are four dog teams, two Air Force and two Navy, two explosive dogs and two narcotic dogs, all four being patrol dogs.  Their mission: support the missions of the Infantry as they flush out and eliminate the Taliban and other terrorists, during what is being called the fiercest fighting Afghanistan has seen since the beginning of the war.

Academy K-9s capture competition kudos

Academy working dogs led the pack for awards during the Nov. 17 canine competition.

It was the 3rd working dog trial hosted by the Academy, with 24 dog handler teams.

Out of nine contests, Academy dogs with the 10th Security Forces Squadron finished first in five trials, second twice and third twice.

Military working dog George C. Haus is now a member of the Academy K-9 team.

After the Academy's first military working dog, Ginger, passed away in July, the members of the American Legion George C. Evans Post #103 decided not to let the memory and function of the canine legend disappear.
